Chapter Six
On Sunday morning, I gathered my four sisters and loaded them into the van. Melanie tried to grab the front seat, and I semi-smiled.
“Sorry, Mel, that seat’s taken,” I said to her.
She crossed her arms. “But I always get that spot.”
“I know, but today that’s not the case. I promise next time, though.”
She turned to sit beside her twin sister, Cara. “Who’s sitting there?”
I sat in the front and pulled the parking break. “A girl from school wanted to come, too. And she already called it.”
I waited for the immature reaction of, “oooohhhhh, Daron has a giiiiirlfriiieeeend,” from the girls in the back, and I got it. I sighed, but didn’t retaliate.
I looked for the bungalow and I found it, not seven houses down.
Wow, she does live close.
I honked the horn lightly and Carmen ran out of the door. She grinned widely at me as she hopped in the front. I could picture Mel giving her a death glare, and I smiled back.
“Alright, off we go,” she said.
I backed out, and drove off. I saw her father standing in the doorway, and I almost shuddered.
“So, what’s goin’ on?”
It really annoyed me when people strove for conversation. “Oh, not much. My mother–” the words came out strained “–is sick, so we’ve left her back home.” The word ‘home’ also didn’t sound right. I never referred to my house as ‘home’.
“Is she okay?” Carmen’s voice was concerned.
I could feel the tension in the car. Michelle and Kate were twelve and, though they didn’t know why Megan was so sick, they knew she was in an awful state and was going downhill. Cara and Melanie were fourteen, and understood perfectly. I didn’t look in the rearview mirror to check their expressions.
I sighed. “Nope. I’ll tell you more about it later.”
The next few minutes were filled with silence. My eyes were trained on the road, watching the white lines in the centre go by.
Line-line-line-line-line-line…
“So where is this party?” Carmen decided that she didn’t like the awkward silence.
“We have a friend who lives in Milton,” Kate answered. “She wants to go to the movies then eat at a restaurant.”
“That sounds like fun!”
Line-line-line-line-line-line…
“Yeah, we’re pretty pumped for it,” Michelle answered.
“And where are you, Cara and Mel, off to?”
“We want to see a movie,” Cara replied. “A new movie came out on Friday, and Mel and I are interested.”
“Cool. What movie?”
“It’s called ‘Immediate Reaction’. It has Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.” *
“I think I know what you’re talking about. The one where they need to get the stolen money back to the big boss guy?”
“Yeah. We think it looks good.”
“I wouldn’t disagree.”
Sounds cliché, I thought.
Line-line-line-line-line-line…
“What about you, Daron? Do you want to see a movie?”
I looked over at her, surprised. “What do you want to see?”
“What about this Immediate Reaction movie?”
I heard a grumble from the back seat.
“I don’t think they want to be seen with us,” I half-joked.
“Well, the only other one that looks decent is a total chick-flick…”
I turned my gaze back to the road. There was no way I was watching a soppy love story.
“I don’t think so,” I answered simply.
She shrugged. “Alright. Then we’ll have to find something else to do.”
Soon after that I arrived at the theaters and my sisters got out of the van. They said their goodbyes to Carmen and ‘it was nice to meet you’-s. Carmen mirrored their words, and I left the parking lot.
“Where to?” I asked.
“How far do you feel like driving?”
I shrugged. “I don’t know. If it’s worth more than twenty bucks of gas, you’re paying.”
She smiled. “Alright. There is this park in Oshawa that I haven’t been to in ages, and I think you might like it.”
“Give me the directions and I’ll go there, then.”

Author’s Note: *This is a totally bogus movie. Don’t bother looking it up, ‘cause it’s BS I made up on the spot xD
